Horses, Trout and Roses is a new property development situated 10km from Machadodorp on the tarred road to Carolina, only two hours from Johannesburg or Pretoria. The 107ha land is divided into 21 stands of 4ha each. Each stand is the size of 40 urban properties, or 6 rugby fields.
Over and above the large size of the plots, provision has been made for stables which may be built by owners at a fenced horse paddock. Each plot is, however, large enough for stables to be built on site near your own house. A burn strip, 4km long and 10m wide, incorporated in terms of the Veld-and-Forest Fire Act, has also been prepared as a safe and convenient training and riding path for horses. This path is accessible from all stands.
There are 5 large dams. Four of the five dams are for trout and the fifth is for tilapia/bream to provide for those who want to fish for tilapia using a float. Most of the plots have a view of one or more dams.
The absence of machinery and noise attract a growing number of waterbirds such as Egyptian geese and ducks. Pheasants and quail are frequently encountered along the paths.
The constitution stipulates that only solar power may be used, which ensures that birds and animals on the estate are not disturbed by noisy generators.
The green movement is fast gaining momentum, and Horses Trout & Roses is probably the first entirely green development of its kind in South Africa.
